Are your soap and skin care products really all natural?

Yes, yes, yes. All of our ingredients are natural. We only want good things going on our bodies! We diligently research our natural ingredients for safety and use only reputable suppliers with whom we have built a relationship. We list ALL ingredients on our labels and web site. Just click any ingredient anywhere on our web site for a quick description or go directly to our informative Natural Ingredients page for more information.

Why is my soap sweating?

This is normal. There are two actions which might contribute to beads of moisture appearing on the surface your soap. 1) When cold process soap is curing, or drying out, water from within is released to the surface. 2) When the amount of water in the air is higher than the in the bar of soap (i.e., it is humid), the glycerin in natural soap attracts water to it causing condensation on the surface. The best thing to do is place your soap on an elevated soap dish which allows it to completely dry on all sides between uses.

What is the white stuff on the top of my soap?

This is a normal by-product of natural soap making. It is most likely dried soap that was reacted early in the processing. As much as we strive to cool soap gradually and evenly, climate and other conditions sometimes cause more of the powder to collect on some batches. It will rinse away after a few uses or you may trim it off if you prefer.

Why is this soap bar a different color than the last time I ordered the same soap bar?

This is due to the fact that we manufacture our soaps weekly in small batches using the freshest raw materials possible. We do not use masking colorants to make color appear uniform. A barrel of organic olive oil can vary in color from pale yellow green to a deep olive green depending on when and where the olives were harvested. The color of the raw material affects the color of finished soap.

Why aren't all your ingredients organic?

We are constantly seeking sources for more and more organics. But some ingredients, such as Vitamin E, aren't available with an organic certification. For others, such as beeswax and honey, we feel that the benefits of buying from an eco-conscious local farmer outweigh shipping organics from lands afar. As for essential oils, some organics are simply unaffordable in the quantity we need or are not available consistently in the marketplace with organic certification.

Why don't you use fragrances like other soap companies?

Although we do get some requests for scenting products with something like "pear" or "raspberry", we have committed to using only pure essential oils from plants in our soaps and body care products. Synthetic fragrances, even the "naturally derived" type, can contain allergens, sensitizers, neurotoxins and any number of dangerous chemicals such as phthalates. Synthetic fragrances are top on the Environmental Working Group‘s Campaign for Safe Cosmetics cosmetic ingredients to avoid.

How do you color your soap?

We only use good old fashioned clays, leaves, flowers, berries, roots and spices for color and texture in our soaps and body care products, nothing more. Nature offers us some beautiful hues!

What soap should I use on my face?

All of our soaps are formulated to be mild and can be used anywhere on the face or body. Some formulations may work better for certain skin types. Try Ute Springs Renewal or Lavender Meadow for drier or experienced skin. Try Lavender Meadow or Bear Bottom Soap for sensitive skin. Try Red Rocks Soap for acne prone oily skin.

Does Mountain Girl Botanics have a Soap for Acne?

Try our Red Rocks Soap. It is formulated with tea tree oil and is intended to be used as an acne soap.

Do you use lye in your soap?

Yes, all true soap begins with an alkali commonly known as lye. But our formulations are carefully calculated to ensure that absolutely no lye remains in the final soap and the bars are near neutral. In fact, we opt to "superfat" our bars, leaving some excess oil in each finished bar--which is why they feel so creamy and rich.

Do you test on animals?

No. We research safety data using existing databases and studies. We never test on animals--only willing human volunteers (and there is no shortage of those kinds of volunteers).

Do you offer free samples?

We love to send out samples with every order and at events. Because we are just a tiny business, shipping out samples to everyone who requests one is unaffordable.

What is the shelf life of your products?

Shelf life varies for each type of product. Please visit our Product Use and Care page.

Do you have products for sensitive or eczema prone skin?

We have formulations for those with sensitivities but we realize they may not be appropriate for everyone. Read our labels and contact us if you are not sure about an ingredient. Our Bear Bottom Soap is formulated for eczema prone skin and is our best sensitive skin soap. You can visit our Allergies and Sensitivity page for more information.

I see some of your products available in a store but not all of them. Why not?

We allow our retailers to choose which products they'd like to carry based on their market. If you want to see a Mountain Girl Botanics product in your local market, ask their purchasing department to consider carrying us!

Why don‘t you offer free shipping?

Shipping is not a profit center for our company. In fact, we aim to just cover costs on shipping and packing. Large retailers are able to use their volume to leverage low shipping rates with shippers. Small businesses do not have this advantage. As we grow, we will continue to negotiate the best rates we can and we will pass the savings along to our customers.

When I opened my package I noticed all sorts of different packing peanuts. Why is that?

We purchase biodegradable packing peanuts from a local company to use in our packaging, however, we also reuse all the packing peanuts we get from our many different suppliers. You may see pink, green, white or any combination of colored packing peanuts. The off-white cylindrical shaped ones are the biodegradable packing peanuts. They are made of rice and will dissolve in water but we recommend reusing them before throwing them away if possible.
